Critical Home Repairs Change Lives

Category : Projects

Our Critical Home Repair projects are designed to make a significant improvement in the living situation of a family in a short period of time, for a modest expense. There is a woman in Belle Vernon that had been sleeping on the couch for ages. A group of college students installed the floor in her new first floor bedroom. Her home is safer and she is able to sleep in a bed again. Two elderly sisters in Crabtree can use their new ramp to safely enter and exit their home; previously they had been missing medical appointments because of the challenge of getting out of the house. The widow of a Marine Corp veteran has a new roof. She can again hook up her kitchen appliances without concern of the water leaking onto them. There is a couple in South Greensburg that are raising their granddaughter. Persistent flooding had rendered their basement unusable and created health and safety risks throughout the house. With a new internal french drain and a lot of cleanup the house is once again safe and fully livable.

Critical Home Repairs serve low-income families that own and live in their own home, but are unable to afford a repair that is necessary for the home’s ongoing habitability. We have wound down for 2017 but are looking forward to the 2018 construction season. To learn more and to download an application, please click here.

On a hunt for the next house!

Category : Projects

In December of 2016 we completed rehabilitation of two houses in Jeannette. In December of 2017 we are nearing completion of our two houses on Jefferson Avenue in Greensburg. WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO IN 2018!?!?!

We are on the hunt for our 2018 builds. The majority of our projects are rehabilitations of blighted houses. While we do occasionally do new home construction, our preference is for rehabilitation – why build a new house at the end of the street when you have to drive past two abandoned ones to get there?

If you have a house that you don’t know what to do with consider donating it to Habitat for Humanity. While we don’t purchase houses we do cover the closing costs and since we are a nonprofit your donation may be tax deductible.

For more information please contact Daniel Giovannelli or by phone 724-221-7510.

New House Under Construction!

Category : Projects

CWHFH is thrilled to announce that thanks to the wonderful generosity of a local family we have acquired a new home for rehabilitation in Jeannette. We are even luckier that this home was lovingly maintained and needs only relatively modest repairs and updates before it is ready for a family.

We will place a family in this home by July 1!

With your help we will place a family in this home by July 1st, but in order to do that we need to raise $15,000. This money will be spent on transactional and direct repair costs in the home – every one of your dollars will be spent in the local community, to support the local community.

Support Habitat, Support your community

We partner with families to help build and rehabilitate homes, because it all comes down to that – a home. With a safe, decent and affordable home families flourish, and when families flourish, communities flourish. Everyone deserves a decent place to live, and everyone can do something today to help make that possible for another family. Lend your financial support, your voice, or your time.

Ramp replacement succesfull!

Check out the finishing touches on the back deck we built for a local veteran and his wife in Blairsville. The husband, who uses a walker, and his wife, who uses a wheelchair, were in critical need of this home improvement and our volunteers were happy to help with that.

A project such as this is what Habitat is ALL about: coming together for those who need a helping hand.

A BIG thank you to all the volunteers who made possible and building a back deck that, as the homeowners put it, “looks like it came out of a magazine!”

Project #14 Underway!

Category : Projects

We are hard at work on our 14th Central Westmoreland Habitat for Humanity House! We have a long way to go, so if you are interested in helping out or donating build supplies please contact Daniel Giovannelli at dgiovannellI@cwhfh.org. All volunteers are welcome, but we are particularly looking for some skilled labor to assist with bathroom and kitchen renovations.

Project #9

Category : Projects

The partners / homeowners for project #9 are Tim,

Teri and their children.  They worked hard to accumulate their “sweat equity” hours by helping with the Kid’s Triathlon last August, the Pumpkin Patch project in October, and of course, the construction of their house. They were given the keys to their new home at the house blessing on Saturday, January 20, 2007.
